Mizoram Assembly Election 2018: Twice-winner R Lalrinawma Fighting From East-I in Aizawl; Cong Hopes to Return to Power

Aizawl: In the coming Mizoram Assembly Election 2018, the East-I seat from capital city Aizawl has been won twice by sitting MLA R. Lalrinawma. This is the only unreserved seat of the state. In 2013, Lalrinawma won it on a Congress ticket. This lawyer had won from the seat in 2008 as well. (Also read: PM Modi to Address Rallies in Mizoram)

In the 2013 Assembly elections, 16,409 votes were cast of which the Congress polled 6,221 votes while the MNF candidate got 5,799 votes. In 2008, in all 13,519 votes were cast. Lalrinawma had got 5,084 votes to emerge the winner against F. Malasawnama by 1,089 votes.

There are 40 seats in Mizoram Assembly. In the 2013 elections, the hill state comprising eight districts had handed over the victory to the Congress. Lal Thanhawla became the Chief Minister of the state. The main contest in the 2013 elections was between the Congress and the Mizo National Front and the former won as many as 34 seats in the Assembly. In 2008 also, the Congress had won 32 seats. Then also, Lal Thanhawla had become the Chief Minister.

The model code of conduct came into force on November 2. The last date of filing nominations was November 9. Voting for the 40 seats would be held on November 28 in a single phase.  Counting of votes would be held on December 11. VVPAT was first used in the country in the 2013 Mizoram Assembly elections.

In Mizoram, a total of 209 candidates are in the fray. The ruling Congress has fielded 40 candidates while the Opposition parties in the state, BJP and Mizo National Front (MNF), are contesting in 39 and 40 assembly constituencies respectively.

Thanhawla is contesting for two seats — Serchhip and Champhai South. Mizoram is the last bastion of Congress in the northeast as it is the only state in that part of the country where BJP has no presence. Around 7.7 lakh voters will decide the fate of 209 candidates.
