Aizawl, Jun 5: Ten people were killed and 19 others injured after a private bus in fell into a 500-metre-deep gorge in Mizoram’s Lunglei district. The accident took place on Tuesday morning when the bus was on its way from state capital Aizawl to its southernmost Siaha district. Majority of the injured persons are from Siaha district.Also Read - Earthquake of 5.6 Magnitude Hits Mizoram, Tremors Felt Across Northeastern States

The vehicle was being driven by the handyman (helper) as the driver was asleep, police reportedly said. “It was raining and it seems the bus got stuck on the side of the road which was dug for laying of telephone wires,” Ankita Chakravarty, the deputy commissioner of Lunglei district, was quoted as saying. “The bus toppled as the driver tried to get out,” she added. Those who got injured were admitted to the Serchhip hospital and the Pangzawl primary health centre and the Haahthial community health centre for treatment. Police said a post-mortem examination will be conducted after which bodies of the deceased would be sent to their respective villages for last rites.
