Mumbai: Facing flak over his ‘elope’ comment, BJP MLA Ram Kadam has issued a clarification that his statement was quoted out of context. The BJP MLA from Ghatkopar constituency faced backlash after a viral video showed him purportedly claiming that he would abduct a girl to help a boy elope with her even she turned down the latter’s proposal. Also Read - Rajasthan Political Crisis: 'If Lakshmi Comes To You Sitting At Home, Don’t Reject Her’, BJP MLA To Sachin Pilot

Clarifying, Kadam told ANI, “A 40-second incomplete video is being circulated by the Opposition. I would request them to listen to my complete statement. If my statement has hurt anyone, I won’t mind expressing regret for the same.” He added, “My statement is being quoted out of context. At that event, I said that all youngsters, whether a boy or girl, should take their parents in confidence before marrying. If they elope without taking their permission, the parents feel disheartened and it is wrong to disappoint your parents. I took a long pause and someone from the audience said something which I repeated on the mic. I continued to speak after that but it was not reported. If I had said anything objectionable, it was being telecast live. There were journalists present at the venue and someone would have pointed it out if I said something objectionable. But no one raised an objection because they had heard me my entire speech. To find the true meaning of an address, one must listen to it in its entirety,” he added. On Janmashtami, at a ‘dahi handi’ event, the BJP MLA had reportedly made the statement. He was criticised by Preei Sharma Menon, a member of AAP’s national executive. Taking a jibe at Kadam, Menon tweeted, “Congratulations on the new job you have given your MLAs of abducting girls. Is it national policy for BJP? MLA Ram Kadam offers to abduct girls for boys. He even offers a hotline number for it.” Also Read - 78 Dahi Handi Participants Injured on Krishna Janmashtami in Mumbai, 11 Hospitalised: BMC
