New Delhi: The Mumbai police have made an elaborate arrangement on the occasion of Muharram procession. To ensure smooth traffic flow, the police has issued an advisory, announcing major route diversion. The movement of the vehicular traffic will be restricted on certain roads and the police have advised the commuters to plan their journeys accordingly to avoid unnecessary delay. The Mumbai police have also tweeted about the diversion. According to tweet, Pydhonie, and Byculla, traffic on the JJ flyover may be affected primarily between 1 pm to 7 pm today. People are advised to avoid commuting on JJ Flyover and use alternate routes from the suburbs to City and vice versa via Eastern Freeway, Pedder Road. Millions of Muslims around the world will be observing the holy month of Muharram which marks the first month of the Islamic Calendar. During the first 10-days of this month, devoted Muslims attend special prayer meetings in the private mosques or their residences. During the ninth, tenth and 11th day of Muharram, Muslims observes fast from dawn to dusk.
It is primarily an Islamic holiday in which people of other religions also take part and celebrate or observe the Muharram activities in India. During this month mostly Shia Muslims, mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS), son of Imam Ali (RA) and the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). On the 10th day of Muharram, Imam Hussain was martyred on the order of Yazeed.
The word ‘Muharram’ means forbidden and sinful. The Shia Muslim community mourns Imam Hussain Ali’s death on the day of Ashura by flagellating themselves with sharp objects on Muharram. This exemplifies the suffering Imam Hussain Ali experienced shortly before his beheading. Sunni Muslims fast on the 10th day of Muharram.
