Mumbai, February 2: Air travellers in Mumbai in the coming two weeks might have to face delay as the city’s main airport runway will be shut down for seven hours till February 17. Passengers have been advised to check flight status before leaving for the airport if the flight is scheduled in the afternoon.
“Work on laying the foundation for installing a new localiser (a navigation equipment) will be carried out during this period,” said an airport official. In another round of closures in May, the existing localiser antenna will be replaced with a new one, the Times of India reported.
Except Wednesdays, the main runway will be shut from 10 AM to 5 PM on all days. Flight operations will be moved to the secondary runway for the time being, but as it is not equipped to handle flights as efficiently as the main one, delays are expected in airlines schedule. The main runway will, however, be operational throughout the day on Wednesdays.
On Thursday, arrivals and departures post noon were delayed by an average of 20 minutes. But later in the evening, a few arrivals were delayed by 30-40 minutes.
Airlines have braced for delays. Jet Airways tweeted, “..our flights to and from Mumbai may get affected. Guests are advised to check flight status.”
