Mumbai, Mar 20: Five Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel and six Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel were injured on Tuesday during the rail roko protest in Mumbai. The police personnel were reportedly injured in stone pelting during the agitation of railway job aspirants during which the students stopped trains on the Central Line between Matunga Road and Dadar railway stations. Local trains on the central line remained stalled for about 4 hours this morning while over 60 trains were cancelled.
Over 1,000 students seeking permanent jobs in the Railways gathered and blocked railway tracks between Matunga Road and Dadar stations during the peak hours on Tuesday. Te students began gathering on the tracks at 7 am and stayed put till 10:45 am.
Commuters faced a harrowing time this morning as many of them could not reach their offices and examination centres. The dabbawala services were also delayed as they remained stranded at several stations on the Central Line. For 4 hours, there was no train movement between Dadar and Kurla on the Central Line.
The Indian Railways also had to reschedule several long distance trains as the route remained blocked for hours. Protesters accused the police of resorting to lathicharge. Minister of Railways Piyush Goyal said that the police resorted to lathicharge only after protesters resorted to stone pelting.
