Mumbai, Dec 9: Mumbai Crime branch on Friday detained two people in connection with seizure of new notes worth Rs 85 lakhs. The Crime Branch had seized the new notes from Dadar in Mumbai. An inquiry has been initiated into the source of the notes. While, police arrested four people carrying new notes worth Rs 76 lakh in Surat. Police is investigating the matter.
In a similar incident on Wednesday, the Income Tax department reportedly recovered Rs 90-100 crore in cash in Chennai. The seized money included Rs 10 crore in new Rs 2000 currency notes, and 100 kg gold from several businessmen. The total worth of the gold is estimated to be at Rs 28 crore. Few days ago, the tax department had made a seizure of Rs 5.7 crore cash in new notes in Bengaluru. The case was latest taken over by two other central probe agencies, the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate to probe instances of corruption, money laundering and large-scale hawala transactions in the wake of the demonetisation on November 8. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had banned notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 in an assault against corruption, black money and fake notes.
Haryana Crime Branch on Thursday night seized new notes approximately worth Rs 10 lakh near Gurugram, during a search operation near. Investigation is currently underway in the incident.
