Mumbai, April 21: Fire broke out at Bank of India’s Fort branch in Mumbai on Friday evening. According to reports, the Bank of India building, a heritage structure, which is located near Bombay High Court, has been evacuated and fire officials have reached the spot.
The reason of fire is yet unknown and Mumbai Fire brigade Chief P Rahangdale who was present at the spot said that it is a medium fire, where firefighting operation is still carried on. The street where the bank is located has been evacuated completely by fire brigade officials.
Bank of India DGM P K Sinha reportedly said, “Around 30 customers and 40 bank staffs were inside when we witnessed the fire smoke coming from the fourth floor. All of us came down and informed fire brigade. No one is inside the building now.”
Some reports suggest that the fire brigade officials were first called at around 4:30 pm soon after which five fire brigade tenders and three water tankers were rushed to the spot from Nariman Point station. There are no reports of any injuries and more details are awaited.

The area where the Bank of India is located is surrounded by several other banks, including the Reserve Bank of India and the Bombay High Court which is a stone throw away distance from the spot. The Fire Brigade Chief has also ordered all the station to stay on a standby alert, as the vicinity holds high profile offices including the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and Bombay High Court. The traffic police officials had also asked the motorist to avoid the Fort area for next few hours.
The Bank of India headquarters is located in a five-storey heritage structure and the smoke was seen coming out of the fourth floor. Initial reports suggest that the building was evacuated safely and no one was injured during the evacuation process. Fire Brigade Chief has also ordered his staff to investigate the exact cause of the fire.
Apart from Bank of India, head offices of Union Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, Jammu and Kashmir Bank is also located on the same street.
The fire has caused a huge traffic jam in Fort area as well as CST Station.
