The Somwari Bazar fire has come a few days after at least four persons, including an elderly woman, were suffocated to death and 14 others injured when a massive fire swept through a highrise building in the city, officials had said.
The fire, which broke out on the 12th floor of the 17-storied Crystal Tower building located in Parel, was doused after about eight-hour struggle. The flames quickly spread to the 13th floor and adjacent flats and trapped many of the 100-plus residents in the building.
Before the Parel building fire, another fire had erupted in Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) refinery at Mahul in Chembur which injured at least 43 persons.
According to locals and eyewitnesses, the fire, which was followed by a loud explosion, with thick black smoke emanating, was visible from several kilometres away, while the blast was heard in places as far as Powai and Sion.
