Mumbai: A 14-year-old girl allegedly hanged herself in Mumbai after being admonished by her mother for watching videos on mobile phone. The minor succumbed at a hospital after battling for life for three days, the police informed on Wednesday.

The girl, a resident of Bhoiwada in Central Mumbai, was chided by her mother last Thursday for watching videos on mobile phone all the time, a police official was quoted as saying in a PTI report.

The girl would be glued to her mobile phone, watching as well as uploading videos using a popular video-editing app, her family members claimed.

On January 10, after being scolded by her mother, the girl immediately ran to the bathroom. When she did not come out for a long time, the family members broke the bathroom’s door to find her hanging from the ceiling, though alive, reported PTI.

She was rushed to the government-run KEM hospital where she died during treatment on Sunday. Meanwhile, further probe is underway.

In a similar incident last year, a teenager allegedly committed suicide in Nagpur district of Maharashtra after his mother took away a mobile phone from him. The 14-year-old was reportedly addicted to video games.

The minor lived in a rented house in Mahal area with his mother and elder sister. His mother had to go to Mumbai and asked him to give the mobile phone to her. As he refused, the woman snatched the handset from him and left.

Disturbed over not being able to play video games on the mobile phone, he allegedly hanged himself from a ceiling fan using a bed sheet at their home. The incident came to light when his sister came back home.
