Mumbai: A 35-year-old man fell off a local train and died while trying to catch a 19-year-old boy who had allegedly snatched his mobile phone.
The incident happened in the early hours of August 19 when Nashik-based medical professional Chetan Ahirrao (35) was standing on the footboard of a Central Railway local train while on his way to Diva station in neighbouring Thane district.
The accused has been identified as Ajay Solanki. As per reports, he snatched the mobile phone from the hand of Ahirrao just as the train was about to leave the platform at Kalwa station. He reportedly hit the deceased on the wrist who then jumped off the moving train to retrieve the phone. However, he fell beside the tracks and was critically injured. He succumbed while being taken to the hospital.
Initially, the police thought it to be a case of passenger falling of a local train but suspicion aroused when his cell phone was found to be missing. On scanning the CCTV footage, the police zeroed in on Solanki.
He was picked up a day after the incident from a slum near Kalwa station and has been charged with sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 397 (robbery or dacoity, with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt).
He has been previously arrested in a case of mobile snatching at Kalyan station in 2017 and has been remanded in police custody till September 3 and further probe into the incident was underway.
