Mumbai: A man who was allegedly involved in 13 rape cases was finally arrested, said police on Thursday. The accused was involved in allegedly molesting minor girls in the slum area of Mumbai, the neighbouring Navi Mumbai town and Thane and Palghar districts.

The accused identified as Rehan Qureshi, a salesman, was nabbed by the Navi Mumbai Crime Branch on Wednesday. He was caught after police scanned the CCTV footage following two occurrences of crime. The accused who is in his 30’s was identified in the CCTV footage of cameras located at the Mira Road railway station in the adjoining Thane district.

Qureshi was allegedly involved in the sexual harassment of two minor girls, aged 13 and 15, at Nallasopara in Palghar, said the police official.

Keeping track of the whereabouts of Qureshi, the Navi Mumbai police had laid a trap at Nayanagar in Mira Road railway station. The accused who was on his way to a girl’s house was caught red-handedly by the police of Navi Mumbai Crime Branch, added the official.

The accused had planned to take the girl with him by lying to her that her father had called her, stated the police. After persuading the girl to accompany him, the accused had planned to commit the offence in an isolated place.

Navi Mumbai Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Tushar Doshi told PTI, “As of now, we have found his involvement in at least 13 cases of sexual assault of minors. We suspect his involvement in other cases also.”

Meanwhile, investigations on the other cases in connection with the accused have begun, added the officer.
