Mumbai-Pune Expressway Landslide: 3 killed due to landslide; a volunteer turns victim of hit-and-run

Mumbai, July 20: Three persons lost their lives and three sustained injuries in a major landslide near the Adoshi tunnel on Mumbai-Pune Expressway. One of the passing by cars was crushed by the loosely held rocks which landed on the highway away after heavy drizzle on Sunday night. A local volunteer from nearby Khopoli village, who had arrived for relief work was killed in a case of hit-and-run.

The volunteer who died has been identified as Ganpat Kudpane (32) rushed to the accident site to help the victims after the landslide. However, in a tragic incident, he was hit by a speeding car and was killed. Police have cordoned off the area. The Khopoli police has registered a case of negligent and rash driving causing death against the driver, who is still at large.

The six lane highway has been completely sealed to carry out repair works. Commuters have been instructed to use the old Mumbai-Pune highway. According to regular pliers, the iron holding on the side of the expressway has become old and so the area has become landslide prone, especially during monsoons.

Repair work is underway and the highway is expected to resume operations in the next 24 hours. Union Minister of Railways, Suresh Prabhu has announced two special trains between Pune and Mumbai for stranded passengers. (ALSO READ: Landslide: Suresh Prabhu announces special trains between Mumbai, Pune) The Mumbai-Pune expressway, a nearly 100-km-long, six-lane road, was built in 2002. It usually sees high traffic over the weekend, with people travelling from Mumbai to Pune and vice-versa.
