New Delhi: India has witnessed unprecedented growth in road connectivity over the last 10 years under the Modi government. Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has expanded the highway and expressway network in India, improving connectivity between cities and boosting transportation. From Maharashtra to Gujarat to Manipur, roads in parts of the country have improved majorly in the past decade. The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is considered as longest, but do you know which expressway earns the most? This expressway generates the highest toll revenue for the government, with rising toll collections as the number of expressways in the country grows.
From the longest to the shortest, the country boasts several remarkable expressways. In this article, we will delve into the highest-earning expressway, a key contributor to government revenue.
According to the data released by the IRB Infra Trust, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway ranks the highest in toll tax collection in December 2024. During this period, the toll collection amounted to Rs 580 crore, with the Mumbai-Pune Expressway alone contributing Rs 163 crore, the highest for any expressway. In comparison, the toll collection for the same month in December 2023 was Rs 158.4 crore.
To recall, in 2002, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, then prime minister, oversaw the construction of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. This expressway connects the bustling cities of Mumbai and Pune, significantly saving commuters’ time.
The expressway begins at Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai and stretches to Kiwale in Pune. Unlike others, it was constructed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) instead of NHAI. Furthermore, three-lane concrete service roads have been built on both sides of the expressway. The construction of this expressway cost approximately Rs 16,300 crore.
