Mumbai rains: India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in Mumbai as heavy rains lash the financial capital of India. The authorities have directed all schools and colleges in Mumbai and nearby regions will be closed on Tuesday, August 19, 2025. In a post on the social media platform X, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) informed, “All schools and colleges in Mumbai (City and Suburbs) will remain closed tomorrow, 19th August 2025 (Tuesday). The India Meteorological Department has issued a Red Alert warning (extremely heavy rainfall), for Mumbai City and Suburbs tomorrow i.e. Tuesday, 19th August 2025.”
BMC added, “In view of the same, District Disaster Management Authority (BMC), hereby declares a holiday for all Government, Private and Municipal schools and colleges in Mumbai (City and Suburbs).”
All government and semi-government offices in Mumbai will remain closed today, August 19, 2025. Private offices/establishments are directed to instruct their employees to work from home.
The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation area (Mumbai city and suburbs) today.
“In this context, except for essential services, all government, semi-government offices, and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation offices in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation area have been declared closed today by the Municipal Corporation in its capacity as the District Disaster Management Authority,” BMC said.
“Furthermore, all private offices and establishments in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region are urgently requested to instruct their employees to work from home, depending on the nature of their operations, and to avoid unnecessary travel, as appealed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation,” it added.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Gujarat, Maharahtra, Goa and Karnataka, predicting extremely heavy rainfall on August 19. Meanwhile, Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Kerala are on orange alert.
“Extremely heavy rainfall very likely at isolated places over Konkan & Goa; Ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra on19th; Gujarat State on 19th & 20th August,” IMD said. IMD noted the presence of a well-marked low-pressure area over Bay of Bengal and said, “Monsoon is likely to be in active phase over south Peninsular and adjoining central India during next 3-4 days.”
Indigo has issued travel advisory informed that the airlines is facing operational challenges due to incassant downpour.
“With Mumbai drenched in heavy showers, several routes to the airport are witnessing waterlogging and sluggish traffic. This has, in turn, led to operational challenges, with delays in both departures and arrivals and we truly regret the inconvenience this may cause,” the Airline said.
“If you’re scheduled to travel, we recommend leaving a little earlier and keeping an eye on your flight status via our app or website. Our teams are closely monitoring the situation and working diligently to keep operations steady. Your safety, comfort, and peace of mind remain our priority, and we deeply value your patience and understanding,” it added.
