Mumbai: A 27-year-old PhD student from Tamil Nadu alleged that he was denied clearance at an immigration counter of Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport for not knowing Hindi. On Tuesday, Abraham Samuel took the issue to his Twitter handle which prompted the immigration department to take action against one of its officers.
Tagging Minister of External Affairs of India Sushma Swaraj, DMK President MK Stalin and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Abraham Samuel tweeted: “Was just denied immigration by an immigration officer in counter 33 at Mumbai CST AIRPORT, for knowing only Tamil and English and NOT hindi! What a disaster! Reported the officer, hope they take action.”
According to Samuel, the immigration officer continued ‘his disgraceful speech’ even after complaining. Samuel tweeted that he left the flight immediately because the scheduled boarding time was 1:00 AM.
“No one in India should be denied immigration for not knowing hindi,” tweeted Samuel unable to accept the ‘disgraceful’ and ‘arrogant’ behaviour exhibited by the immigration officer in counter 33 at Mumbai airport.
Following the complaint by Samuel, his VISA was cleared within four minutes while and the immigration officer has been temporarily taken off duty, News 18 quoted a senior immigration official as saying.
“We regret that such an incident took place at Mumbai airport. The said officer who has been taken off the counter, pending investigation, will be given soft skill training and his counselling will be done,” the official added.
Since the nature of the allegations is considered to be serious, investigations are being held out in detail, stated the officer.
