Mumbai: Ride-service aggregator Uber is set to launch UberBOAT, a new mode of transport for Mumbai residents from the Gateway of India on Wednesday morning. The speedboat service, UberBOAT, is expected to have six to ten seats, informed sources. They said that through this new feature, riders could book either a single seat or an entire speedboat, and must board the boat in 15 minutes.
As per reports, Uber has planned to cover Gateway-Mandwa Jetty through the speedboat with a fixed fare that would soon be converted to the Uber dynamic pricing. While the normal ferry journey to Mandwa, Alibaug or Kihim beaches would take one hour, the UberBOAT is expected to cover the distance in a span of 20-22 minutes, stated the sources.
A senior Uber official reportedly said that the UberBOAT transportation would be a “game changer” for Mumbai. This service will be launched by the Mumbai Port Trust chairman Sanjay Bhatia on Wednesday. An official from the Mumbai Port Trust told Times of India, “If successful, the UberBOAT service could be launched for other destinations, including Navi Mumbai, in near future.”
The official added that the demand for water transport service is high in Navi Mumbai areas especially from Nerul, Belapur to south Mumbai. The boat service would also be helpful in establishing a link between two cities and help commuters from far suburbs reach south Mumbai for daily work.
Other than the water transport service, Uber is set to launch its fleet app soon. The Uber Fleet app has been piloted over the last few months in various Indian cities, including Delhi and is now being rolled out across the country, Uber Head of Driver Product Daniel Danker told PTI. Using the Live Map feature, fleet owners can track the status and monitor vehicles in real-time. They would also get an insight into fares, trips and quality metrics for the entire fleet in one simple view.
