Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Election Results: BJP wave in Panvel; Congress wins Bhiwandi, Malegaon

Maharashtra Civic Poll Results: Congress party emerged as single largest party in Bhiwandi and Malegaon Municipal Corporation election, whereas Bharatiya Janata Party is set to win the 78 member Panvel Municipal Corporation.

Mumbai, May 26: The results of civic body elections in Maharashtra have been declared. Three municipal corporation – Panvel City Municipal Corporation (PCMC), Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation and Malegaon Municipal Corporation – went to polls on May 24. Congress party emerged as single largest party in Bhiwandi and Malegaon Municipal Corporation election, whereas Bharatiya Janata Party is set to win the 78 member Panvel Municipal Corporation where the polls were conducted for the first time.

Around 55 per cent average voting was reported in Panvel, Bhiwandi and Malegaon municipal corporation elections on May 24, said the State Election Commission. The fate of 1252 candidates has been sealed in EVM machines. For the 256 seats of the three municipal corporations in Maharashtra, the BJP fielded 189, NCP 90, Congress 152, Shiv Sena 144 candidates. The Panvel City Municipal Corporation has 78 seats, Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation 90 and Malegaon Municipal Corporation 84.

The Panvel Municipal Corporation witnessed its first election after it came into existence in October last year. The Bhiwandi-Nizampur City Municipal Corporation is under the rule of the Congress-led alliance, while the Malegaon municipal corporation has NCP-AIMIM alliance in power.
