Ranchi, Apr 7: A Muslim man died after he was brutally thrashed by villagers for being in a relationship with a Hindu woman. The incident took place in Jharkhand’s Gumla town where the villagers tied a Muslim man to a tree and assaulted him for hours. The 20-year-old man later succumbed to his injuries. Three people have been arrested in this regard, while an FIR has been registered against unnamed people.

Mohammad Shalik, a resident of Raza Colony in Gumla town – was allegedly in a relationship with a Hindu girl of a nearby village, Soso. The girl invited Shalik to meet her for the Ram Navami procession on Wednesday. When Shalik dropped her at her home after their meeting, villagers surrounded him. The angry locals tied Shalik to a tree and thrashed him for hours, leading to his death.

According to a report of Hindustan Times, the woman told the police how the villagers unleashed the violence on Mohammad Shalik. The report also said the locals had warned Shalik not to visit the their village and meet the girl. “Though investigation is on, we were told by the villagers that the boy had been asked earlier not to meet the girl and never visit the village,” Gumla superintendent of police Chandan Kumar Jha was quoted as saying.

After the killing of Mohammed Shalik, communal tension was witnessed in the Gumla town. Heavy police deployment was seen in the town. SP Chandan Kumar Jha, however, said the situation was under control. The incident comes amid rising communal tensions in Jharkhand that followed footsteps of neighbouring Uttar Pradesh and formed anti-romeo squads and shut illegal slaughterhouses. There are feelings among Muslims that moves were taken to target the community.
