Nandigram Election Result: Despite taking her party Trinamool Congress to a historic win in the West Bengal elections, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has lost in Nandigram to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari after a battle that went down to the wire. Mamata, who was declared the winner by 1,200 votes in Nandigram initially, lost by 1,953 votes after which the VVPAT votes were being matched. The TMC spokesperson Derek O’Brien later told his party was approaching the Court’s and the Election Commission for registering a protest. Mamata in her address, however, said, “I accept the verdict given by people of the Nandigram.” Referring to her party’s massive win, the West Bengal CM said, “the people of Bengal have saved the country today.”
Moments after the win, Mamata said, “Now let us focus on work. Together we have to beat Covid-19. The swearing-in ceremony would be a very small affair. Let us respect everybody. Humanity is the biggest thing. Let us play the match with the democratic spirit and constitutional spirit.”
“Don’t worry about Nandigram,” Mamata said when asked by reporters. “Now our priority is tackling Covid-19,” Mamata said. “Bangla Jai Hochey, Bangla Manusg chey Jai Hochey,” she added.
Notably, the Nandigram assembly constituency in East Midnapore district, about 125 km from Kolkata, was considered the biggest battleground where sitting chief minister Mamata Banerjee had challenged her turncoat.
The Nandigram Vidhan Sabha seat was known as a stronghold of the communists from where a CPI candidate was mostly returned except in the 1996 and 2011 Assembly polls. But the agitation against forcible land acquisition by the previous Left Front government led by Mamata Banerjee, had changed the political equation in the area.
The polling in Nandigram was held in the second phase of elections on April 1. The Vidhan Sabha seat this time witnessed a high-profile contest between TMC Supremo and Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and her former party colleague Adhikari. Apart from Adhikari and Banerjee, the Left front candidate Minakshi Mukherjee was also in the fray from the Vidhan Sabha seat.
Here’s How Things Unfolded
“This is BIG. Mamata Banerjee, the sitting Chief Minister, loses Nandigram. BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari wins by 1,622 votes. After this crushing defeat, what moral authority will Mamata Banerjee have to retain her Chief Ministership? Her defeat is a taint on TMC’s victory”, tweeted BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya.
