Mumbai, June 14: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has reportedly identified both the alleged shooters who gunned down rationalist Narendra Dabholkar in Pune in 2013. Media sources have claimed that both the culprits are members of the Hindu spiritual organisation Sanatan Sanstha. Furthermore, both of them are also reportedly wanted by Goa police in the blast case of 2009. Both the shooters have been identified by the agency, but while identity of one of them has been revealed, that of the other one has been withheld. According to Indian Express, sources said that one of the shooters has been identified as Sarang Akolkar, who is absconding. The findings are based on the investigations, emails and sketches obtained from the laptop of one of the accused, Dr. Virendra Tawade. Tawade is a member of a Sanstha offshoot Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS), and was arrested last Friday. A senior official involved in the probe told Express, ““Our probe has led us to believe that the murder was carried out by a close-knit group of four, with Tawade being the second in command.” ALSO READ: Narendra Dabholkar murder case: CBI to conduct lie detector test on two members of Sanathan Sanstha Also Read - Teenage Girl Shot, Killed For Resisting Sexual Harassment in UP's Firozabad
“We have found that Tawade was receiving orders from his handlers and passing them on to Akolkar and another Sanstha member. We believe the last two were the killers, and Tawade and his handler the key conspirators,” added the official. Tawade had allegedly written in emails sent to Aholkar, directing that Dabholkar was their target. It is believed that the task of killing Dabholkar was assigned by a senior member of HJS, after which Tawade assigned it to Aholkar. They communicated through mails between 2008 and 2013, at least one of which was a coded mail and which has been recovered by the CBI now. Tawade, who is being interrogated by the CBI at their Navi Mumbai office, wrote in the mail, “Desi aur videshi sahitya ke liye karkhana banana padega (We will have to make factories for domestic and foreign literature).” Tawade told his interrogators that ‘Deshi Sahitya’ means country made weapons, while ‘Videshi Sahitya’ means foreign-made weapons. He also them that the larger plan was to raise an army of 1,500 ‘sevaks’ to fight for an ‘Hindu state’. He has, however, maintained throughout the interrogation that he did not participate in either execution or planning of the murder.
Clearer picture is expected to emerge after the police gain permission to run scientific tests, including brain mapping and narco analysis on Tawade, whose remand ends on June 16. The police has also recovered a floppy disk from the Sanstha’s Navi Mumbai office and will be sending it for forensic analysis of its contents, in order to see if the Sanstha has other people, who spoke against it, on its target or not.
