Astana, June 9: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is at the Shanghai Cooperation Summit (SCO) summit in Kazakhstan’s Astana. Modi on Friday met Chinese President Xi Jinping at the SCO summit and also thanked him for making India a permanent member of the summit. At the SCO, where Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was also present, the Indian Prime Minister also talked about growing terrorism and efforts to be put to tackle the same.
“After 12 years of observership, will get membership of SCO. Want to thank all members for their support,” said Modi. “Will have to make coordinated efforts to counter the menace of terrorism. Terrorism is one of the biggest problem violating human rights and human values,” said Narendra Modi during his address at the SCO.
Modi also said that it was impossible to reach a solution “till all countries make concerted efforts, on radicalisation, terrorist recruitment/ training/financing issues”. (Also Read: All you need to know about SCO and who are its members)
Foreign Secretary Subrahmanyam Jaishankar also addressed the media. He said, “Meeting with China was cordial and positive. PM thanked Chinese President for China’s support which made possible India’s accession to SCO.”
“At a time of global uncertainty, India-China relations are a factor of stability, important for India-China to work together. It’s understood that where India-China have differences they shouldn’t become disputes if handled well can become opportunities,” Subrahmanyam added further.
Present at the summit was also Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. PM Modi and Nawaz even greeted each other on Thursday. After Narendra Modi’s surprise visit to Pakistani PM in Lahore in December 2015, this is the first time they met.
Nawaz Sharif also spoke at the SCO. He said, “I congratulate India on joining The Shanghai Cooperation Organization.”
“We must leave a legacy of peace for future generations; not toxic harvest of conflict&animosity; let’s create shared spaces for all”, said the Pakistan Prime Minister at SCO.
