New Delhi, Aug 6: At the first in its kind of townhall conference, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reacted to the flogging of Dalits in Una. Although, he did not refer to the incident in direct terms, his indication was clear. Expressing disgust against such acts of hooliganism, Modi assured action against the self-styled gau rakshaks (cow vigilantes) who have taken law into their own hands.
“Gau bhakts’ and ‘Gau sevaks’ are very different. True sevaks should realize most cows dies by eating plastic. Some anti-social elements hiding behind the cow protector’s masks are trying to spread hooliganism,” Modi said. “I have asked states to prepare dossier on so-called cow vigilantes,” he added, assuring that action would be taken against such anti-social elements. “70-80 per cent of them are those who are involved in criminal activities in the night, but to safeguard themselves, they have adopted mask of being a gau rakshak during the day. It fills me with anger when I hear about those opening shops in name of gau raksha.”
The hard-hitting statements by the Prime Minister comes at a time when allegations of being anti-Dalit are being levelled against the Bharatiya Janata Party. It took nearly a month for Modi to react to the horrific flogging of Dalits in Gujarat’s Una district, who were found with cow carcasses. Although they had not slaughtered the cow, they were carrying the carcass for skinning it, a traditional job performed by the Dalit community.
