Narendra Modi to visit Russia today, economic ties to be among top agenda

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will leave for his two-day Russia visit to take part in an annual summit talks with President Vladmir Putin.

New Delhi, Dec 23: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will leave for his two-day Russia visit to take part in an annual summit talks with President Vladmir Putin. The two leaders are also expected to sign key agreements on defence and nuclear energy after the summit. Expanding economic ties will be the top agenda of the meeting.

The Defence Ministry had cleared the purchase of Russian S-400 Triumf air defence missile systems at an estimated cost of Rs 40,000 crore, last week. Talking about the agenda of the visit, Foreign Secretary Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said, “We expect to sign a number of agreements covering a very broad range of fields. Final touches are being given on some of them,” Foreign Secretary Subrahmanyam Jaishankar told reporters. (Also Read: Narendra Modi to leave for Russia today for 16th Annual Summit)

 Jaishankar had also said that both Modi and Putin will focus on the needed cooperation in defence and nuclear energy spheres. He said, “Russia has been a very major military and strategic partner of India. There will be a lot of discussions on that.” While currently bilateral trade stands at 10 billion dollars, both the countries want to enhance to to 30 billion dollar in the next ten years

The terror situation and condition of people and refugees in Syria will also be discussed. Ways to tackle terrorism will be one of the most important engagement of the talk. Modi is scheduled to have dinner with Putin today. He will address around 3,000 members of the Indian community in Moscow.
