Lahore, December 25: In an unplanned diplomatic meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday evening landed at the lahore airport in Pakistan from where he was welcomed by his counterpart Nawaz Sharif and escorted at his residence in Raiwind. The Ministry of External Affairs later in the evening confirmed about the development. Sharif’s grand-daughter’s were planned a month ago and the family of Pakistan Prime Minister decided this day as it also marks birthday of Sharif. Coincidentally 25th of December is also birthday of Atal Bihari Vajpayee where Modi is supposed to visit for dinner. Modi’s Air India One landed in Lahore at around 4:40 IST, few hours after the announcement of his surprise visit to Pakistan. Sharif was present at the airport to escort him on his first ever visit to Pakistani soil. On Friday afternoon Modi who was on a visit to Afghanistan surprised everyone by announcing his visit to Pakistan through tweet. Even the external affairs ministry were unaware about the development and welcomed the decision taken by Modi.
Not only Pakistan but leaders of opposition in India are also surprised by Modi’s first ever visit to Pakistan where he is expected to meet his counterpart Nawaz Sharif on the way back from Kabul. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the last Indian Prime Minister who visited Pakistan in 2004, after which Narendra Modi visited the neighbouring country on Friday evening.
Following his visit Lahore was kept on high alert. Heavy contingent of police and Pakistan Rangers have reached the Allama Iqbal International Airport and taken charge of the security.
Manish Tewari, opposition leader from Congress criticised Modi’s surprise visit to Pakistan saying that it is utterly ridiculous and said, “This adventure of PM Modi is going to have serious implications on India’s national security”.
Modi on Friday afternoon tweeted, “Looking forward to meeting PM Nawaz Sharif in Lahore today afternoon, where I will drop by on my way back to Delhi”.
Modi in another tweet said, “Spoke to PM Nawaz Sharif & wished him on his birthday”. Modi will be the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Pakistan in last 11 years.
India Pakistan relationship had witnessed some positive developments in last several months. During Modi’s Paris visit Modi and Sharif shook hands and held a two-minutes meeting on the sidelines of the climate change summit.
