New Delhi, Mar 12: After being snubbed by the Samajwadi Party on Rajya Sabha elections 2018, Naresh Agarwal on Monday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Reports say Agarwal was upset after the SP nominated Jaya Bachchan as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha polls. He joined the BJP in the presence of Union Minister Piyush Goyal at the party headquarters.
After joining the BJP, Agarwal said that he was given a backseat for a “woman working in films”. “Films mein kaam karne wali se meri hesiyat kardi gayi, unke naam par humara ticket kataa gaya, maine isko bhi bahut uchit nahi samjha. Main koi shart par nahi aya, koi Rajya Sabka ki ticket ki maang nahi hai (They chose a woman working in movies over me, I didn’t find it acceptable. I have not joined the BJP on any condition or demand for Rajya Sabha ticket),” Agarwal said.
The SP has six Rajya Sabha MPs – Kiranmayee Nanda, Darshan Singh Yadav, Naresh Agarwal, Jaya Bachchan, Munawwar Saleem and Alok Tiwari – who are retiring. The SP has only 47 votes and party chief Akhilesh Yadav can only send one leader to Parliament. The remaining 9 additional votes will be given to the BSP candidate under the party coalition.
The SP decided to send only Jaya Bachchan to Rajya Sabha. Earlier last week, Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh called Jaya Bachchan a loyal leader and said that she deserves to be the Samajwadi Party’s candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls.
“Naresh Aggarwal has joined many parties. He started his career in Congress. He was member of cabinet of Rajnath Singh. Then intermittently he was in Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and then in came in Samajwadi Party. He is widely experienced,” he said.
