New Delhi: National carrier Air India has started an internal probe on the incident of an inebriated passenger on a New York-Delhi flight urinating on the seat of an elderly woman two days ago. Airline sources said a probe has commenced on the basis of an initial report submitted to the authorities.
“A detailed internal investigation is now on to ascertain if the crew followed the assigned SOPs (standard operating procedures) and whether they reported the matter when the aircraft landed back in Delhi, among other things.” The airline’s In-Flight Services division has been tasked to carry out the investigation.
On September 01, an inebriated man travelling in Air India’s New York-Delhi flight had allegedly peed on a woman who seated in the same flight. The incident came to light after the woman’s daughter tweeted about the same stating how her mother had been traumatised.
Indrani Ghosh, the woman’s daughter wrote, “Disgraceful (Friday) on your flight AI 102 from JFK to Delhi a drunk passenger removed his pants and peed on the seat my mother was sitting!!! She was travelling alone and is completely traumatized! Reply ASAP.”
Junior aviation minister Jayant Sinha took cognizance of the tweet and immediately replied back asking Air India to take up the matter immediately and report back to either the aviation ministry or the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
Following the incident, another airline also noted that economy class passengers have a limited quota of alcohol and the crew can refuse to serve more to any passenger found in an inebriated state.
Currently, safety laws on passengers’ disruptive behaviour onboard aircraft mandate a ban on guilty passengers, restraining them from using domestic airlines.
Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha has asked the flag carrier to follow up on the matter on an urgent basis.
