New Delhi, June 6: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday conducted raids at the National Defence Academy premises in Pune’s Khadakwasla and booked Om Prakash Shukla, Principal, and few others for irregularities in the 2012 appointment of the teaching faculties at the training institution.

Along with Shukla, some unknown officials of Integrated Defence Staff MoD and Chemistry HOD Maheswar Roy have also been booked for corruption in appointments of the teaching faculty. Professors of Political Science, Chemistry and Math at the defence academy have been charged with criminal conspiracy, cheating and corruption.

“Dr Om Prakash Shukla falsely claimed exaggerated experience of teaching and research in his applications to UPSC for the post of Professor in NDA in 2007 and for the post of principal in 2011,” CBI said, NDTV reported. He added that the exaggerated teaching experience of Shukla wasn’t verified by the defence ministry.

The CBI also searched offices and residences of the accused in Pune. Speaking at the raids, NDA said that the academy was apprised of the allegations by the CBI.

“NDA was apprised of the allegations by the CBI team. It is clarified that the issue related to allegations of submission of inappropriate documentation by some academic faculty members at the time of their selection and appointment to NDA by the UPSC,” a statement from the academy read.

Shukla was appointed the principal of the academy in 2011. However, the corruption in the appointment of the teachers began in 2007 when he was applied for the post of professor, the officials said.

According to the reports, the accused professors tweaked the Academic Performance Indicators or API of the candidates to make them qualify for the teaching posts at the National Defence Academy (NDA). The CBI said that the candidates’ documents and certificates were allegedly forged to qualify them for the posts.

The accused principal allegedly sent the names of less than qualified candidates to Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), which appoints the teachers at the academy.
