Navratri 2017: Shiv Sena Workers Force Shutdown of Over 500 Meat Shops in Gurugram

At least 500 meat and chicken shops were forcefully shut down by a group of people claiming to be Shiv Sena workers in Gurugram on Thursday in view of the Navratri festival.

Shiv Sena shuts 500 meat shops for Navratri in Gurugram

Gurugram, September 22: At least 500 meat and chicken shops were forcefully shut down by a group of people claiming to be Shiv Sena workers in Gurugram on Thursday in view of the Navratri festival. The party has served notices to every meat shop in the city to remain shut during these 9 days as selling or serving meat during this festival hurt the Hindu sentiments, Shiv Sena spokesperson Ritu Raj told Times of India.

He told news agency Press Trust of India, “We have not served notices to restaurants such as KFC and other food chains that serve chicken as they are not seen openly. One will have to face consequences in case the instructions are not followed.”

Ritu Raj told ANI that the party gave a memorandum to Gurygram Deputy Commissioner Vinay Pratap Singh demanding to shut down of illegal meats shops. Raj told ANI, “50 per cent of shops in Old Gurugram were already closed, those open were made to close by us”.

The Shiv Sainiks forcefully shut down meat shops in Surat Nagar, Ashok Vihar, Pataudi Chowk, Sadar Bazaar and the DLF area in Gurugram. To make sure that no meat shop remains open during Navratri, over 200 workers from their party have decided to patrol the streets so that no eateries can serve non-veg food.

A senior police officer told TOI that no one can take the law into their hands. The officer said they if these shops are forcefully shut down by Shiv Sena workers, they will take strict action against these people. However, the police informed that no complaint is yet filed in this matter.
