The nine-day festival Navratri, which commences today, is a celebration of Goddess Durga or Shakti and is commemorated with much fanfare throughout the northern region of the country. Meanwhile, people from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana celebrate Ugadi, which marks the New Year for the Hindus. In Maharashtra, people celebrate the day as Gudi Padwa. The festival is considered to be auspicious as it is believed that Lord Brahma had created the universe on this day. The day also marks the onset of the Satyayug.
