New Delhi, Dec 29: Top brass of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA government is strongly in favour of Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan’s proposal of construction of a new Parliament building. There is an evident consensus among NDA allies with no affiliated political outfit opposing the move. However, the Left parties including CPI, CPI(M), along with Janata Dal (United) have sharply objected, describing it as an unjustified expenditure of taxpayer’s money.
The Urban Development Ministry headed by M Venkaiah Naidu has positively responded to the contentious proposal. Naidu, along with his deputies will hold meeting with Central Public Works Department (CPWD) to discuss the cost involved and the feasibility of the project. “It’s a fact that Parliament is congested. Both Houses of Parliament, Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha needs space. We have initiated the proposal, there will be a debate and discussion, only then we would move forward,” said Rajiv Pratap Rudy, MoS, Urban Development.
However, Left parties were the first to raise objection of the multi-crore plan. “There may be a need for some refurbishment. But not at a time when the farmers of this country are committing suicides, unable to pay their loans. The flood victims in Chennai are not being provided adequate help by the Centre but they (Parliamentarians) are will not cut down on their luxuries,” said CPI(M) MP P Karunakaran.
Janata Dal (United) president Sharad Yadav also rubbished the proposal, saying, “How is there a shortage of space? No one has a problem in current building,” the Rajya Sabha MP said.
