New Delhi: Trashing the claims of Vinay’s mental instability, the public prosecutor on Saturday told the court that Vinay recently made two phone calls to his mother, hence the claims of his lawyer that he was refusing to recognise even his mother was false. “There is no medical history of mental instability of convict Vinay Sharma as claimed by the convict’s counsel AP Singh,” Public Prosecutor Irfan Ahmed informed the court. The court had sought a report from the Tihar Jail authorities after counsel AP Singh sought better medical treatment for Vinay, who is scheduled to be hanged on March 3 along with Mukesh, Akshay and Pawan.

After the hearing, the court reserved the order in this case. Whether this can create a roadblock to the hanging remains to be seen.

The jail authorities have also submitted the CCTV footage of Vinay ramming his head on a wall and how the doctors attended him immediately.

Meanwhile, the Tihar jail authorities are completing the routine procedures of the last few days. Death row convicts get to meet their parents/relatives for the last time before execution. Since the date of the execution of the four — Mukesh, Pawan, Akshay and Vinay — has postponed twice before, some formalities have already been done. Tihar jail authorities said that Mukesh and Pawan have already met their families before February 1. Akshay and Vinay have now been asked when they want to meet their family members.

This is the third date for the execution as the first two dates of January 22 and February 1 were postponed as all legal remedies were not exhausted.

Vinay’s counsel AP Singh had also approached the Election Commission complaining against the process in which Delhi government rejected Vinay’s mercy plea ahead of the election when model code of conduct was in place.
