New Delhi, December 12: The Supreme Court on Tuesday adjourned the hearing on the plea by Mukesh Singh – one of the accused in the Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case – for recall of a May 5 verdict upholding his death sentence. The next hearing will take place in January 2018.
The Apex Court in its May 5 verdict had upheld the death sentences of all four convicts in the 2012 gangrape and murder case of a paramedical student in a moving bus. The Supreme Court had upheld the death sentence and had described the crime as “rarest of rare”.
This is a second time the Supreme Court has deferred the hearing on the petition. Last time, the case was postponed by the bench chaired by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice R. Banumathi on November 13 after the bench was told that the other three accused were also moving the court for review petition on the May 5 verdict.
The Apex Court in its May 5 verdict had upheld the death sentence of Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, Akhsay Thakur and Pawan Gupta.
The four were convicted of raping and killing the 23-year-old paramedical student inside a moving bus during the night of December 16, 2012. Thirteen days after the incident the victim died in a Singapore hospital due to internal injuries.
The rapists, pounced on the young girl who had boarded the bus with her friend to go home after seeing a movie.
After committing the crime, the accused – six in number – dumped both on the side of a road. Some onlookers alerted the police. The brutality of the crime led to nationwide outrage – and street protests.
In 2015, a fifth accused, Ram Singh, committed suicide in Tihar Jail in Delhi. The sixth, a juvenile, who was accused of ripping apart the woman’s intestines, was sent to a correction home for three years and was released after serving his probation period.
