New Delhi: Clearing way for his execution on March 3, the Patiala House Court on Saturday dismissed the petition of Vinay Sharma, one of the four death row convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case, seeking direction to provide high-level medical treatment to him.

During the hearing of 2012 Delhi gang-rape case, the court observed, “General anxiety and depression in case of a death row convict is obvious. In the case at hand, evidently, adequate medical treatment and psychological help have been provided to the condemned convict”.

Reacting over the development, Asha Devi, Nirbhaya’s mother said,”It was a tactic to delay the execution. The convicts are misleading courts. They have exhausted almost all legal remedies and I believe that they will be hanged on March 3.”

Earlier in the day, the public prosecutor had trashed the claims of Vinay’s mental instability. “Vinay recently made two phone calls to his mother, hence the claims of his lawyer that he was refusing to recognise even his mother was false”, Irfan Ahmed, the public prosecutor told the court.

Notably, the court had sought a report from the Tihar Jail authorities after his (Vinay) counsel AP Singh sought better medical treatment for the rapist, who is scheduled to be hanged on March 3 along with Mukesh, Akshay and Pawan. March 3 is the third date for the execution as the first two dates of January 22 and February 1 were postponed as all legal remedies were not exhausted by the convicts.
