Thiruvanathapuram, May 5: The brutal rape and murder of a 29-year-old Dalit law student has not seen any breakthrough as investigators drew a blank on day 6 of the probe. The police had on wednesday released a sketch of the culprit but no arrests have been made yet, although investigators are questioning 10 suspects. Meanwhile, the Oomen Chandy government announced a compensation of Rs. 10 Lakh to the victim’s family.
The state government, which has come under heavy criticism for lapses in security for women, also promised a government job for the victim’s sister. According to a report in the Times of India, the Ernakulam district collector has been ordered to coordinate the financial aid to the family whule the Chief Minister has sought the permission of the Election Commission to disburse the aid as an exception, since the state is to go to polls this month. Meanwhile, the post-mortem report of the woman’s body revealed the cause of death as ‘smothering or strangulation.’ ALSO READ: Nirbhaya-like rape repeated in Kerala: Police release culprit’s sketch, but no arrest as of yet
The report said that a deep gash in her neck, could also have been the cause of her death. It further says that the woman’s body bore 38 wounds in all. However, it could not be ascertained that the wounds were inflcited before or after the rape and murder. Of the 38 wounds, five were said to be major and fatal. The report also established that her private parts were penetrated with some sharp object, up to her intestines. Some 10 suspects are being questioned.
However, the investiagtion team ruled out the involvement of the man who was detained in Kannur, as the police could not find any evidence linking him to the crime. A test comparing his finger prints with those found from the crime scene was also conducted but it turned out to be negative. The 29-year-old was bruatlly raped and murdered at Perumbavoor last week, sparking outrage as the crime bore chilling similarities to the 2012 Delhi rape and murder case.
