New Delhi, Nov 2: 2012 Delhi gangrape and murder victim Nirbhaya’s brother is a pilot undergoing training with an airline and it has been possible because of Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, said her mother Asha Devi. Asha Devi, speaking to Mail Today, said that Rahul Gandhi inspired her son to keep going on and never quit after he was broken following his sister’s gangrape and murder.
Asha Devi said that Nirbhaya’s brother had gone into a state of shock when the incident happened in December 2012. She said that it was Rahul Gandhi, who counselled her son and motivated him to do something good in life to support his family.
Nirbhaya’s mother also said that all through her son’s pilot training of 18 months, Rahul Gandhi would call her son over the phone and ensure he doesn’t quit. She added that once her son completed his training and joined an airline in Gurugram, Rahul Gandhi would call and check how he was doing.
Asha Devi also said that not just Rahul Gandhi, but his sister Priyanka Gandhi, too, calls them up to ask about their health.
Nirbhaya was raped and murdered by six men, including a juvenile in a moving bus on December 16, 2012. The Supreme Court, earlier this year, upheld death penalty for the four culprits – Vinay Sharma (23), Akshay Thakur (31), Mukesh (29) and Pawan Gupta (22). Asha Devi, speaking to India.com earlier this year, had said that while this was a big relief for her in her fight for justice, she still awaited the day the culprits would be hanged.
She recently complained to the Delhi Commission for Women that even after five months of the Supreme Court’s verdict, death sentence has not been carried out. Following this, the DCW on Tuesday issued a notice to the Tihar Jail Administration and Deputy Commissioner of Police, South District questioning the delay in the imposition of death penalty to the Nirbhaya case perpetrators.
