‘Nirbhaya’s Mother Has Great Physique’: Former Karnataka DGP Considers His Statement to be Totally Within Limit

Bengaluru, Mar 16: Former Karnataka DGP HT Sangliana on Friday reacted to the controversy around his statement that Nirbhaya’s mother, Asha Devi, has a ‘great physique’ and said that he considered his statement to be totally within the limit. “I feel people are making an issue out of a non-issue,” he said.

Giving a clarification, he said that the statement was made in order to emphasise the importance of women’s safety. “I said it in order to emphasise the importance of protection & security to women, they should be given protection at all times,” Sangliana said. (ALSO READ – Nirbhaya Would’ve Been Safe Had She Not Gone Out Late: Raipur KV Teacher)

Meanwhile, reacting to Sangliana’s remark, Nirbhaya’s mother said, “It would have been better if he had spoken about our struggle than making a personal remark. It shows that people’s mentalities in our society has not changed.”

“I see Nirbhaya’s mother, she has such a good physique. I can just imagine how beautiful Nirbhaya would have been,” he reportedly said during an award function that was meant to honour women. (ALSO READ: Nirbhaya Gangrape And Murder: December 16, 2012 to December 16, 2017 – A Timeline)

Sangliana also gave a few ‘safety tips’ to women. He said if a woman was overpowered, she must surrender, instead of fighting back. ‘This way we can be safe, save life and prevent being killed,” he was quoted as saying in a report by Bangalore Mirror.

In a crime that shook the nation, Nirbhaya was attacked by a group of six men aboard a moving bus in South Delhi. She was with a friend who was left brutally injured in the incident. The incident occurred on the night of December 16, 2012. Nirbhaya was brutalised with an iron rod and her intestines were pulled out by the attackers. She battled for life for 13 days before dying in a Singapore hospital.

Out of the six accused, Ram Singh was found hanging in his cell in Delhi’s Tihar Jail in March 2013. Among the convicts was a juvenile. He was released in December 2015.
