Last Update: Janata Dal-United (JD-U) leader Nitish Kumar, who led the Grand Alliance to victory in the assembly elections, on Friday took oath as the chief minister of Bihar for the fifth time. Overseen by Governor Ram Nath Kovind, Nitish Kumar took the oath of office and secrecy in the name of God in Hindi at the sprawling Gandhi Maidan. Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Lalu Prasad’s sons Tejaswi Yadav and Tej Pratap Yadav then took oath as ministers.
The event was attended by a galaxy of opposition leaders from across the country, including chief ministers of half-a-dozen states and former prime minister H.D. Deve Gowda. Representing Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the dais at the event was central minister M. Venkaiah Naidu.

01: 55 PM Update: Nitish Kumar will take charge of the Bihar state. The swearing-in ceremony will begin shortly. Leaders like Farooq Abdullah, Venkaiah Naidu, Omar Abdullah, Virbhadra Singh, Shiela Dikshit, Mamata Banerjee have reached at the venue.
1: 35 PM Update: Nitish Kumar, Lalu Prasad Yadav and other leaders who are going to take oath reached Gandhi Maidan in Patna. “Nitish ko ab tayyiari karni chahiye, Dilli aane ki aur agla Pradhanmantri banne ki (Nitish should jump into national politics and prepare himself to become next PM),” said Farooq Abdullah.

1: 20 PM Update: Lalu Prasad Yadav’s family has arrived for Nitish Kumar’s swearing-in ceremony at Gandhi Maidan in Patna. Meanwhile, the Delhi-Patna flight carrying Bihar Congress MLAs diverted to Ranchi due to fog. MLA Abdul Mastan who has to take oath is in it.
Patna, Nov 20: Nitish Kumar is all set to take over as Chief Minister of Bihar for the third straight term on Friday at 11 am. The stage is set for the Nitish Kumar’s swearing-in ceremony at the Gandhi Maidan in Patna. The oath taking ceremony of Nitish Kumar will be attended by Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi, former Prime Minister H D Devegowda, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, his National Conference counterpart Farooq Abdullah and Congress leaders in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and Ghulam Nabi Azad.
The Bihar police has made elaborate arrangements at Gandhi Maidan. Around 1.5 lakh people including 50 VVIPs are expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony. About 2,000 policemen including 30 deputy superintendents of police are deployed to make security arrangements at Gandhi Maidan. The police have put up 40 CCTV cameras to monitor the situation. The distribution of ministries will be keenly observed by political analysts. Around 33 ministers will take oath in the ceremony. With Lalu Prasad Yadav’s party emerges as the single largest party in Bihar elections, the post of Deputy Chief Minister will be given to RJD. Lalu Yadav’s son Tej Pratap and Tejaswi Yadav, who contested for the first time in Bihar election and won are expected to get ministerial berths. Some report suggest that Tejaswi Yadav will be given as the position of Deputy Chief Minister.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who did an aggressive campaign against Kumar-Lalu Prasad combine during the elections, was invited by the Chief Minister to attend the function. But he will not be present and has instead deputed Union ministers M Venkaiah Naidu and Rajiv Pratap Rudy. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and counterparts from Delhi and Sikkim, Arvind Kejriwal and CM P K Chamling have been invited along with chief ministers of Congress-ruled states.
A notable presence will be that of BJP ally Shiv Sena, which has accepted the invitation and decided to send two Maharashtra ministers Ram Das Kadam and Subhash Desai to the function. Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray himself was invited by Kumar but he has expressed his inability to attend the ceremony.
