Nashik, Feb 22: Polling in Nashik along with nine other municipal corporations concluded on Tuesday. The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) election results 2017 will be declared today. The NMC elections witnessed around 61.60 per cent voting on February 21. This year’s figure is marginally better than the 57% polling in the last civic elections in 2012. We will be updating live on the NMC election results 2017. Catch the live updates on the NMC election results 2017 here.

In the last Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) that were held in 2012, out of the 122 seats, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) had won  40 seats and came to power, Shiv Sena had won 19 seats, BJP had won 14 seats while Congress had won 15 seats. The NCP had won 20 seats; CPI (M) had won 3 seats while others had won 11 seats. Along with BMC, polling in the municipal corporations in Pune, Nashik, Nagpur, Solapur, Amravati, Pimpri Chinchwad, and Thane also took place on Tuesday. In Nashik, a total of 10.73 lakh citizens cast their votes this time as against around 10 lakh in 2012, TOI reported.

The Nashik Municipal Corporation is the governing body of the city of Nashik in the Indian state of Maharashtra. The total wards in the NMC are 31 while the total number of seats in the NMC is 122. It is believed that Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) could gain votes because of their traditional strongholds in Nashik whereas Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s statement of the BJP adopting Nashik was enough to create an impact in the city.

As per reports published by TOI, the BJP candidates did not have a connect with the voters in the city like the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena has. MNS chief Raj Thackeray during a recent election rally wooed voters by showcasing the achievements by the MNS through Power point presentations. Earlier this month, Thackeray attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his 2014 election promise of depositing Rs 15 lakh in the bank accounts of every Indian. He also took a dig at Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and criticised him of speaking lies.

Parties Seats won in 2012
Total Seats: 122
MNS 40
NCP 20
Shiv Sena 19
Congress 15
BJP 14
CPI (M) 3
Others 11

It is believed that the there is going to be a power fight between MNS, Shiv Sena and the BJP in Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC). This year’s NMC elections play a crucial role in deciding the future of Raj Thackeray-led party. Except Nashik, the MNS has failed to gain their strongholds in other districts of Maharashtra like the Congress, NCP, Shiv Sena and BJP.  It was in the 2012 Nashik Municipal Corporation elections that the party tasted its first success in Municipal polls. Various initiatives were taken by the NMC to encourage citizens to vote for the civic polls. The NMC, Nashik Citizens Forum (NCF) and Kavita Raut Foundation jointly organised a motorcycle rally.

To ease problems caused to voters, the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has launched two websites namely http://nmcvotersearch.co.in/ and www.nashikcorporation.in where voters can check for their names along with the address of their polling booth. The municipal corporation is headed by a mayor and administers the city’s infrastructure, public services and police. Members in the corporation belong to state’s leading political parties such as the Nationalist Congress Party, Indian National Congress, Shiv Sena, Bharatiya Janata Party and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena.
