New Delhi, Aug 14: Ahead of the filing of claims, objections, and corrections in the NRC Assam final draft to claim citizenship, sources have revealed that out of the 40 lakh people, the final list may carry the names of 20 lakh to be excluded from the registration. An official has revealed that the final registration list may carry the names of 20 lakh people and not 40 lakh, NDTV reported. The final draft of Assam’s National Register of Citizens (NRC) will be published on July 30 and out of 3.29 crore applicants, 2.89 crore were declared eligible to be added in the complete NRC Assam draft while 40.07 lakh were left out. The claims, objections, and corrections form will be received at the NRC Seva Kendra in the prescribed form from August 30 to September 28, 2018. According to the reports, the home ministry is also considering extending the deadline for filing of additional documents for any claims and objections in the NRC Assam final draft. “Not only will the claims of 40 lakh people be filed, we would get some fresh applications. So most of the political parties are of the view that this deadline should be extended,” a senior official said, adding that the government would need extra time to spread awareness on how to fill the forms and what additional documents are needed.
The home ministry fears that some names have been added based on their fake documents, which, an official said, is going to be a major hurdle. “It is being suspected that in some cases, the name of an individual has appeared in final draft who is not a valid citizen. How would this anomaly be rectified? It is going to a major hurdle,” he told NDTV.
The final draft may carry the names of 2.39 crore people. A total of 55,000 administrative officers are working on the NRC Assam final list.
