Bhubaneswar, April 29: Heavy rains in Bhubaneswar on Friday brought respite to the scorching heat in the state. However, downpour combined with hailstorms left locals stranding at Guwahati railway station. Train services from Silchar to Guwahati has been temporarily suspended due to landslides in the region. Following the rains, temperature has come down to 37 degrees.
On Tuesday, eight people died due to severe heatwave in Odisha. Sonepur recorded a maximum temperature of 46.5 degrees Celsius on Tuesday making it the hottest place in the state while Bolangir recorded 46 deg C, according to the Meteorological Centre. As per a report from Special Relief Commissioner’s office, the number of alleged sunstroke death cases has increased to 109. Heatwave condition also prevailed at few places over interior Odisha for the next two days. Coastal belt experienced slight dip in the soaring heat after a shower in a couple of places. Bhubaneswar recorded 38.9 deg C less than 39.2 deg C which was recorded on Monday. On Thursday, 17 places across Odisha recorded temperature above 40 degree C. The rains may prove as a slight cooling element as normal life was disrupted in the state due to heat wave condition.
