Odisha: Rape Survivor's Family Faces Social Boycott, Villagers Demand Community Feast

Bhubaneswar, October 20: Family of a minor tribal girl, who was raped by the headmaster of a school in Odisha’s Koraput district, is now facing social boycott. The headmaster of a tribal residential school in Balda area of Koraput’s Nandapur block was arrested on charges of impregnating a class 9 student.

Adding to their miseries, the villagers are demanding a community feast for pregnancy of their daughter before marriage. “I am a daily labourer. The community feast would cost me at least Rs 30,000. How can I arrange such a big amount. Besides, I need money for regular health check up of my daughter,” said the girl’s father, the Hindustan Times reported.

The district administration is yet to provide him any assistance to the family. District welfare officer Jagannath Soren said it has been found that the matron of the hostel is also involved in the crime.

“We are concerned about the problems the family is facing. The district administration may give some assistance to her family,” he said.

According to the departmental probe committee, it as a case of “illicit relationship” on the part of the headmaster and not that of sexual assault, Soren said.

“As there was no sexual assault, we can’t recommend financial assistance. The district collector may decide on that,” he said.

As per Odisha Victim Compensation Scheme, 2017, a rape victim is entitled to get a financial assistance of Rs 3 lakh.

The girl’s father has filed an FIR accusing headmaster Bidhubhushan Nayak of forcing the girl to have physical relationship with him. Even the abortion is ruled out as the girl is five months pregnant.
