Hyderabad, Dec 22: After the Osmania University postponed exams in its affiliated colleges and autonomous institutions and closed its hostels in the wake of protests following a student’s suicide, the University authorities said they are unable to host the Indian Science Congress. The Osmania University Teachers Association (OUTA) on Thursday condemned the authorities for expressing their inability to hold the 105th Congress due to the ongoing agitation in the campus, at the last minute, a report said.
The teachers association said that for last four months, nearly 20 committees worked for the Indian Science Congress and the Vice Chancellor’s expressing the University’s inability to hold the meeting has only pointed out that the efforts were useless.
“In the 105-year history of the Indian Science Congress (ISC), it has never been postponed barely two weeks before it was to commence. ‘Security problems’ at the University are being blamed for the postponement of the event, whereas the university is functioning normally and peacefully. Citing the Indian Science Congress as a reason, the semester examinations were postponed and the messes on the campus are closed. Because of this, the academic calendar of the university is disturbed,” said OUTA president Prof. Battu Satyanarayana said.
He added that about 16,000 delegates registered, paid the registration fee, and made their travel and accommodation arrangements. “A number of Bhatnagar awardees, Nobel laureates and plenary speakers, ISCA awardees and eminent personalities had expressed their consent to participate in the congress,” he added.
