New Delhi: In a shocking development, students of Delhi University’s (DU) women-only Gargi College have alleged molestation by outsiders, who they say were pro-CAA protesters, who broke into the campus and carried out the act during a college festival.
The alleged incident took place on Thursday at a time when security is already high in the national capital due to the February 8 Delhi Assembly Election as well as several anti-CAA protests in the city.
According to reports, men, who were participating in a pro-CAA rally nearby, broke into the campus on the third day of the college’s annual fest called Reverie. The men, according to the college’s students’ union, entered the campus around 3:30 PM with the alleged incident taking place between 4 PM-5 PM.
It has been alleged that the outsiders, around 200 in number, molested, groped and harassed the students, many of whom were locked up inside bathrooms by the goons, described as ‘middle-aged men’ by the survivors. Delhi Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, meanwhile, who were stationed outside the university, are said to have ignored the students’ cries for help.
Acting principal of the college, Dr Promila Kumar, is said to have asked students, ‘why do you attend fests if you don’t feel safe,’ when approached to be informed about the alleged incident.
Many horrifying accounts and videos of the alleged incident have gone viral on social media.
No complaint has been registered thus far. The students, meanwhile, have planned a protest on Monday.
