Reports say that the raids are being conducted in connection with alleged undue favours given by the former UPA government to a media house. While details of the raids are yet to emerge, they come after an FIR was filed against Karti Chidambram, Indrani and Peter Mukerjea in 2007/2008 FIPB approval for INX Media, say reports. Chidambaram has said that the Modi government was using the CBI to silence him. “Government by using CBI and other agencies is targeting my son and his friends. Government wants to silence my voice. Government wants to stop me from writing, as it has tried to with leaders of Opposition parties, journalists, columnists, NGOs and civil society. Every case was processed according to law and approval granted or refused accordance with FIPB recommendations consisting of 5 GOI Secretaries,” Chidambaram said.

Reacting to the raids, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy said, “Better late than never.” He also alleged that Chidambaram holds illegal properties in London.

The Congress has called it political vendetta. “Chidambaram has done nothing wrong, these raids are politically motivated,” said KR Ramasamy of the Congress. “They just want to damage P Chidambaram’s reputation because he is a voice against Modi government,” said Congress leader Karate R Thiagarajan.

Karti Chidambaram is also under the scanner over foreign investments into his organisation Vasan Health Care. The Enforcement Directorate had last month issued a showcause notice to Karti Chidambaram and others in connection with alleged foreign exchange rule (FERA) violations of about Rs 2,100 crore. P Chidambaram had accused the ED of making wild allegations against his son. He clarified that Karti was “never a shareholder or a director” of either of the companies being probed by the ED.

Karti Chidambaram’s premises have also been raided in the past in connection with the Aircel-Maxis deal.
