New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin are discussing several crucial issues, including defence and military equipment. These include the S-500, SU-57, and a dangerous weapon, the FAB-3000 glide bomb, which has caused massive destruction in Ukraine. Now, Russia is offering the same to India. Let’s find out more about this bomb, how powerful it is, and how it could be a game-changer for India.
The FAB-3000 is a 3000-kilogram high-explosive aerial bomb measuring 4.2 meters (approximately 13.8 feet). Its diameter is 2.1 feet. It has an explosive filling of 1400 kg. it uses Tritonal (TNT + aluminium powder), which significantly increases its explosive power.
It was developed many years ago, and Russia has modernised it.
As soon as it’s released from the jet, the wings open. The bomb starts gliding in the air. It automatically steers towards the target. It can be launched from a distance of 70 km. This means the pilot can attack without entering the range of enemy air defences.
The Russian Air Force is deploying it from the Su-34 fighter-bomber. Wherever it lands, it creates a crater 50-60 meters wide and 15-20 meters deep. Concrete bunkers, bridges, factories, everything is reduced to ashes in minutes. Even soldiers hidden in underground tunnels don’t survive.
The shockwave and shrapnel from the explosion cause destruction in a radius of hundreds of meters. Ukrainian soldiers call it a ‘flying cloud of death’.
The FAB-3000 glide bomb is similar to the American JDAM-ER, but it is three times more powerful.
American JDAM-ER: 500-1000 kg bomb, 72 km range.
Russian FAB-3000: 3000 kg bomb, 70 km range, 1400 kg of explosives.
In other words, the American bomb is no match for the Russian one in terms of weight and destructive power.
Pakistani and Chinese bunkers, command centres, and airbases can be destroyed with a single bomb. It will be apt for destroying Chinese bunkers built in the high mountains on the LAC.
It can be easily integrated onto the Indian Air Force’s Su-30MKI. Also, it is cheap and reliable, and one bomb can wipe out an entire enemy camp.
Reports suggest that Russia is also ready to provide India with the technology for the UMPK kit along with the FAB-3000. This means it can be manufactured in India itself.
