Panvel Municipal Corporation Election Results 2017: BJP wins civic poll with two-third majority, PWP secures 23 seats

Reacting to BJP's decisive win in Panvel civic polls, party MLA from Panvel Prashant Thakur said, "People have chosen development under the leadership of CM Devendra Fadnavis ji."

Panvel, May 26: The results of Panvel City Municipal Corporation (PCMC) elections were declared on Friday. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swept civic body in its maiden election, winning 53 out of the 78 seats contested. The coalition of Peasants and Workers Party (PWP), Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) secured 27 seats.

The electoral battle is Panvel was primarily contested between the BJP and PWP. Panvel, considered to be a stronghold of the latter, witnessed a change in electoral atmosphere following the surge of BJP in 2014, which led to several defections from the PWP camp.

BJP won a total of 53 seats, whereas its alliance partner RPI, which contested on 3 seats failed to open its account. The PWP bagged 23 seats. Its alliance partners – NCP and Congress bagged 2 each.

In a major setback to Shiv Sena, the party failed to open its account in the Panvel civic body. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) of Raj Thackeray also failed to win even a single seat in Panvel municipal polls.

Reacting to BJP’s decisive win in Panvel civic polls, party MLA from Panvel Prashant Thakur said, “People here have voted for development. They have chosen the leadership of PM Modi and our CM Devendra Fadnavis ji. We take the resolve to work wholeheartedly for them and justify the mandate.”

The Panvel civic body was constituted in October 2016. The maiden election for the corporation on Wednesday, along with urban body polls in Bhiwandi and Malegaon.

Although the BJP won with a brute majority in Panvel, the saffron party failed to reiterate the results in Bhiwandi and Malegaon. Electorate of both the cities chose Congress as the single-largest party.
