Panvel, May 26: Results of Panvel City Municipal Corporation (PCMC) election results 2017 were scheduled to be declared today. The counting of votes would begin at 10 AM, the State Election Commission had confirmed. Polling for all 78 seats in Panvel were held on Wednesday. Watch video highlights from the counting day here:

Panvel municipal body was formed in October 2016, after the state cabinet approved the proposal. In the first ever elections conducted, BJP led an aggressive campaign to wrest control over the civic body. The key electoral contest in Panvel was witnessed between the saffron party and the coalition of Congress, Shiv Sena and Peasants and Workers Party (PWP).

For the 78 seats contested in Panvel, a total of 418 candidates entered the fray. As per the assessment of Association for Democratic Reforms, a total of 39 per cent candidates have declared assets above Rs 1 crore, whereas, 14 per cent have registered criminal cases against them.

BJP fielded its candidates on 75 seats, whereas, 3 were allotted to its ally RPI-led by Ramdas Athawale. The Shiv Sena is contesting on 68 seats alone. Congress, in alliance with PWP and NCP, is contesting on 12 seats, whereas, the PWP fielded its candidates on 48. The NCP was also allotted 12 seats to contest.

Apart from Panvel, the civic body elections were also conducted in Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation and Panvel City Municipal Corporation. The results are scheduled to be declared today.
