New Delhi: A part-time maid and her minor son have been arrested for allegedly murdering an elderly couple and robbing cash worth Rs 9 lakh and some gold jewellery at the residence of the couple in southeast Delhi’s Amar Colony, police said.

On January 26, Virender Kumar Khaneja (77) and his wife Sarla (72) were reported missing. Immediately, a police team reached the couple’s house at Mount Kailash. The flat was locked from inside and the mobile phones of the couple were switched off, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (southeast) Chinmoy Biswal.

When police broke open the lock of the flat in the presence of neighbours and relatives, they found decomposed bodies of the couple lying on the floor. The couple’s son Dr Amit Khaneja who lives in the US does not contact the couple very often, the DCP said.

During the investigation, police suspected the role of their part-time domestic help, who visited the house of the elderly couple once or twice a week to give massage to Sarla. Though the maid denied the allegations, a CCTV camera footage revealed the role of the maid’s son, Biswal added.

On January 18, at about 11 AM, the maid had planned to steal the cash and jewellery at the couple’s home. After finishing the household tasks, the maid left, leaving the son hiding inside the house. At around 2.30 PM, after Virender left the house, the maid’s son strangulated the elderly woman and robbed the jewellery from the house. Later, when Virender returned, the teenager forcefully snatched key of a drawer from him and strangulated him. He later robbed the cash from the house, the officer said. Police later recovered the stolen Rs 9 lakh cash, gold jewellery and other articles from the accused duo.
