New Delhi: Motorists found driving under the influence of alcohol will now have their driving licences suspended for six months in Maharashtra. This was announced by Maharashtra Transport Minister, Diwakar Raote after a high-level meeting of transport department officials. The meeting was attended by MoS Home (rural) Dipak Kesarkar and many other officials.

Reports claimed that a similar action will be taken against those found indulging in rash and over-speeding, jumping traffic signals, overloading goods vehicles, carrying passengers in goods vehicles and speaking on mobile phones while driving.

Meanwhile in Delhi, around 15,000 police personnel has been deployed across Delhi to ensure celebrations on New Year’s eve go off smoothly, police said. “We have deployed around 15,000 police personnel across Delhi to maintain the law and order situation on the eve of New Year to ensure that the celebrations go smoothly,” Madhur Verma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) said. Any incident of hooliganism and drunk driving will be dealt strictly, he added.

To ensure that women safety is not compromised, women police personnel will also be deployed in plain clothes at various strategic locations across the city, the officer said. Maximum police personnel will be deployed at crowded places like malls, markets and metro stations, the officer said.
